Think in terms of naturalism vs. schematic (geometricized) portrayals and why you think that certain historical periods favored one style over another in terms of how that image functioned in that particular culture. In order to answer this question, you must choose one work from Antiquity and one from the Middle Ages.

Hint: Works that you may want to consider are: Polykleitos' Doryphoros, the Tetrarchs, the Justinian mosaics, Byzantine icons and/or the Beau Dieu from Amiens in order to answer this question.
