Case Study: Purpose Statement: When communicating with team members, it is important to be concise, clear and to the point, yet convey critical information accurately and timely. Standardized communication strategies are one way to ensure that you are effectively conveying information. The SBAR (situation, background, assessment and recommendation) techniques is widely used to improve safe, team-based communication. Practice SBAR by recalling a recent patient (either real or used in a case study in your clinical courses or in the video from this week). Your laptop or computer will need video capability and audio to complete this assignment. Record how you would provide a hand-off report to the nurse coming on the next shift to care for the patient. You will be giving report at the bedside, so you will be speaking about the patient in front of the patient, as well as family members. See Exercise 3 on p. 120-1. There have been some minor adjustments. You may use a PowerPoint slide to show your SBAR and then narrate with audio from PP or use ScreenCastoMatic (free version).
