Social workers can empower themselves and their clients to advocate for changes to social programs using evidence based in practice to support the proposed changes. Social workers who can locate legitimate, peer-reviewed research and organize their findings into a cohesive message will be able to galvanize individuals and groups to work together to advocate for changes to the social programs that serve them.

For this assignment, use the same social worker role, social program; Mental Health and issue; AOD and research that you have been compiling throughout the course.

In your report:

  • Describe the selected social program and summarize the issue it is facing. Explain why the issue is relevant to your selected social work role. Describe the other stakeholders affected by the issue.
  • Summarize the benefits of addressing the issue using evidence-based practice. Summarize the risks of using evaluation methods that are not based on evidence to inform program changes.
  • Summarize the findings from your literature review of the evidence-based research. Describe any challenges to finding current, valid, or unbiased research related to social work practices to address the issue.
  • Propose changes to the program based on your findings so far and request feedback from your supervisor on any of the following gaps in your understanding of the research to prepare to present your ideas to leadership: research questions, variables, research designs, validity, research sampling and data analysis methods, statistical significance, or the application of peer-reviewed research to social work practice.
