The main effector lymphocytes of the adaptive immune response are B cells and CD8+ CTLs. But there is a very abundant 3rd type of lymphocyte, the CD4+ T cell, that has no direct effector functions.

i) Describe the roles of CD4+ T cells. You should be able to list at least 3.

ii) The existence of CD4+ T cells seems to add a lot of complexity to the immune response! Since they have no direct function in fighting pathogens, what seems to be the purpose in having them?
