Logistic Regression (308, number 4B)
Introduction
Binomial (or binary) logistic regression is a form of regression which is used when the dependent is a dichotomy and the independents are of any type. Logistic regression can be used to predict a dependent variable on the basis of continuous and/or categorical independents and to determine the percent of variance in the dependent variable explained by the independents; to rank the relative importance of independents; to assess interaction effects; and to understand the impact of covariate control variables.
You will use logistic regression procedures for this assignment.
Specific course competencies assessed by this assignment:
Apply multivariate correlation and regression analysis and structural procedures using SPSS to analyze research data.
Apply the APA style in writing the results section of a research report
Task
Conduct a logistic regression by completing the tasks listed in the evaluation checklist using the helpful dataset.
Process
1. Download the SPSS helpful dataset.
2. Using the helpful dataset, answer the following research question:
• Can individuals who are evaluated as helpful or not helpful (cathelp) to their needy friend be correctly classified into these two categories based on ethnicity (Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Other) (ethnic), the extent to which the helper felt sympathy toward the friend (sympatht), the amount of anger felt by the helper toward the needy friend (angert), and the helper's feeling of self-efficacy in relation to the friend's problem (effict)?
• When you set up your logistic regression model make sure you use the Forward method (LR) of entry in a single block.
• In order to respond to this research question, complete the tasks identified in the evaluation checklist below.
• Organize your response around each of the tasks listed in the evaluation checklist (i.e., each checklist task should be a separate heading in your document).
• Regardless of the results of your evaluation of assumptions, proceed using the full, unaltered dataset provided.
Evaluation Tasks
Provide informationally adequate descriptive statistics.
Identify the logistic regression hypothesis(es) in null form.
Describe the results of your evaluation of multicollinearity. Identify how you evaluated this assumption.
Describe the results of your evaluation of the goodness-of-fit of your data to the logistic regression model. Identify how you evaluated this assumption.
Test your logistic regression null hypothesis(es). Provide the results of all tests. Make sure you use the Forward (LR) method of entry.
Describe the percentage of the DV accounted for by all included independents.
Interpret the meaning of all odds ratios for each significant independent.
Write a parsimonious results section that draws from the information you provided in response to the tasks above and that conforms to APA style. Include as a minimum an APA style table.
