Please answer any three of these questions on our play, A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry. You should try to elaborate least one paragraph for each answer, but don't let that limit you: you should as much as you want in each. The more you write, the more ideas you will have, and you will be building your writing stamina.
1. How would you describe the relationship between Mama and either one of her children, Walter or Beneatha? What are their major conflicts? Do they agree on anything?
2. Pick a monologue, an extended solo speech by any character, and describe how it reflects what we need to understand about that character.
3. Lorraine Hansberry coined the phrase, "young, gifted, and black" to describe her generation. How would you use this phrase to develop our sense of any character in the play, and not just members of the Younger family?
4. There are various symbolic aspects of this play worth considering: Mama's plant, Travis's liminal space (no bedroom, in-between mother and father), the Nigerian clothing Asagai brings Beneatha. Pick one symbol and discuss how it contributes to the meaning of the play as a whole.
