Use the dataset sats98 on the companion website for this exercise. The variable Verbal contains the average scores on the verbal SAT in 1998 for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. PctTook is the percent of high school graduates, in each state, who took the SAT that year.
a. Make a scatterplot showing the connection between average verbal SAT (y) and the percent of graduates who took the SAT in a state (x). Describe the relationship between these two variables.
b. Compute the least squares regression line for the relationship between these two variables. Write a sentence that interprets the slope of this equation in a way that could be understood by people who don't know very much about statistics.
c. Based on the appearance of the scatterplot, do you think that a straight line is an appropriate mathematical model for the connection between Verbal and PctTook? Why or why not?
d. Explain why the intercept of the equation computed in part (b) would not have a sensible interpretation for these two variables.
