Students must answer the following question:
Select a television news report or a newspaper article that demonstrates real-life application of, or a failure to apply, management skills then compare and contrast the way thatmanagement skills are demonstrated in the work with management theory learned in this subject.
Leaders and managers appear on television and in newspaper articles every day. Often they are responding to a crisis or explaining something that they are doing. In many cases they are astute, clever and thoughtful, conducting themselves and conveying their message in ways that management theorists would regard as excellent. In other cases, they behave very very poorly.
You will select a news item, describe it very briefly, then analyse it in terms of management skills by linking the things that people in the news item do or say with things you have learned in management skills. You will give your opinion, supported by management theory, of how well, or poorly, the people conduct themselves. Consider, for example, the way that:
• Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II responded to the news that Lady Diana Spencer had been killed in a car crash in France (See Bolman & Deal 2003, p.334)
• the then Mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani conducted himself in Page 9 of 17 MB122 Management Skills the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks. (See Bolman & Deal 2003, p.303)
• the now private citizen and lawyer Rudy Giuliani conducted himself in his dealings with the 45th President of the United States.
• the Prime Minister of Australia responded when he was criticised for holidaying in Hawaii during the bushfire crisis in Australia.
• Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam responded and continues to respond to the citizen protests in Hong Kong
• President of China Xi Jinping has spoken about Chinese and international efforts to contain the COVID-19 virus outbreak.
• the 45th President of the United States responded when asked to comment on Citizenship Amendment Act protests in India during his visit to India in February 2020.
You should not write about politics. This assessment item relates to managers and their skills.
In completing this assessment item students must draw upon relevant theory and must use a minimum of 6 scholarly sources beyond the text book to support their argument. Note that text books are not usually scholarly sources. Academic journal articles and academic books of research are scholarly sources. The lecturer will give advice on how to identify and use scholarly sources in class.
