Assignment:
Discussion Prompt: Tensions and Justice
After reading the Bible passages assigned in the Reading and Viewing assignment, consider the following scenario:
Imagine a federal district court judge is given the responsibility to ensure that justice is done in a case at the sentencing phase. The defendant was convicted of a capital offense-a particularly brutal murder. The victim was a socially unlikable, abrasive, and dishonest man. The defendant is the victim's wife. She is attractive, soft-spoken, confessed to the murder, and has expressed her deep sorrow and regret. She is the mother of three children, two boys and a girl, all under the age of seven.
Discuss the tensions in this scenario by addressing the following:
- Briefly describe the range of emotions the judge might be feeling, and the genuine moral conflicts with which she might be dealing.
- What would justice look like in this case? Explain.
- Use Scripture to deal with the tensions, and take a definitive stand on the proper range of punishment.
