The purpose of this assignment is to
(i) learn about various data formats and their pros and cons through independent research and
(ii) to work with an XML-based format called KML both with a visualisation tool and a text editor.
Question 1
Given an example of an application (in a sentence or two) which would require each of the following data refresh rates:
(i) faster than once per second
(ii) slower than once per second but more frequent than once per day
(iii) less frequent than once per day but more frequent than once per year
(iv) less frequent than once per year but still updating
Question 2
Give an example of a datetime written in both ISO-8601 (with time zone) and Unix epoch time formats. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each format?
Question 3
With which formula (function name and input) could one display the following Emojis in MS Excel (ignoring colour)?
Question 4
For what applications would the JPG image format be preferred over GIF? What is the main benefit of the SVG format compared with JPG and GIF?
Question 5
Read up on the KML and KMZ file formats. How do they differ and in which cases is the KMZ format more suitable over KML?
Question 6
Imagine you have been on holidays to four interesting destinations and you wish to present a tour of these places to some friends using Google Earth. Prepare a single KML file that presents them. The file when opened with Google Earth should show the places plus a description that has the following information:
- the (fictitious) date(s) that you stayed at or near the destination
- an interesting fact about the place (one sentence)
Requirements:
(i) Among the four places chosen, two must be from the list of World Heritage sites
(ii) The other two places must be outside of the list can be of your choosing anywhere in the world (the four places need not be geographically close to each other).
(iii) At least one of the places must have a polygon drawn around it (to indicate a region rather than a point) while at least one should consist of a path (e.g. a driving or hiking route). Each path/polygon should contain more than three points.
(iv) Each place has a slightly different viewing angle, also different from those in the default "Sightseeing Tour" that comes preinstalled with Google Earth.
A useful tip: Google Earth comes with a "Sightseeing Tour" preinstalled. To view the KML code that creates Google Earth's "Sightseeing Tour" you may right click there, select Copy (as shown in the figure), then paste the result into a text editor.
Describe the process you used to create the KML file (at most 500 words or two pages not including references). You may use screenshots if that makes the explanation easier.
