Problem: High-V League is an elite tuition centre that claims to offer the best PSLE, O-Level, and A-Level tuition in Singapore. One of the company's claims-to-fame is the rigorous process it uses to select its tutors. Tutors must possess certain minimum qualifications to apply, after which they are invited to take verbal and written communication tests. Only those scoring above certain cut-offs for these two tests are invited for a selection interview.

  1. Distinguish between compensatory and non-compensatory selection methods. Which of the two is being employed by High-V League? Justify your answer.
  2. There are several different ways of setting cut-offs such as those described in the question above. Describe three (3) different ways that High-V League may set cut-offs for its communication proficiency tests.

One of High-V League's competitors, Oxbridge Tuition, uses a linear additive approach to combining information about candidate tutors. Their method is based on a multiple regression model derived from a Singapore sample. The company intends to apply the same model when selecting tutors for a new centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Describe the process of cross-validation and explain why it is necessary in the situation described above.
