Thermal Analysis
Investigate a one dimensional transient heat conduction along a 5 cm long steel bar. The initial temperature of the bar is 50 deg C and one end of the bar is held at this temperature. The other side of the bar is suddenly brought into contact with a surface at 250 deg C. Develop a finite difference model of transient one dimensional heat transfer and use this model to show how the temperature along the bar changes with time. The model can be developed using a spreadsheet or coded in python or MATLAB. Compare these results with a simple model produced in ANSYS Transient Thermal.
The report of approximately 10 pages should follow the recommended structure below.
1 Introduction: This will describe the problem to be investigated, give the key PDE and include a sketch of the geometry with labelled boundary conditions.
2 Finite Difference [FD] Model. Give a description of the development of the PDE to a FD analogue and how this was implemented in your model. If a spreadsheet is used, the formulae must be stated and if a MATLAB or python code is used, the code clearly described and must be annotated and listed as an appendix.
3 Provide results in the form of contour plots or a chart for temperature and tabulated data as appropriate for at least five timesteps.
4 Discuss your results with reference to a steady state analysis and those obtained by a transient thermal analysis in ANSYS.
5 Comment on the suitability of your choice of either spreadsheet or code you used to investigate this problem.
6 References. [Harvard Style]. You are expected to conduct a brief literature review and cite sources appropriate for masters level study.
