Question: Health and healthcare in this country and around the world are being transformed by information and communication technology (ICT). Increasingly these industries are turning to digital information and the use of electronic communication to fundamentally change the services they provide. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 laid the foundation to operationalize the infrastructure for a digital healthcare system. This unprecedented change has major implications for the workforce and workforce development. The widespread adoption of electronic health records (EHRs), digital communications between patients and healthcare providers, accessible web- based health information, remote diagnosis and treatment, and the availability of large health data repositories necessitate widespread training and upgrading of skills for health practitioners and support for workers who will interface with patients and these technological advances. Health professional education engagement should be a vital component of the learning health system (LHS).
