Question 1: Managing performance is an important and fragile process for managers.
Tough calls regarding who is performing well or not are decision makers. While it may be easy to spot who is not performing well, it may not be the same to diagnose the underlying causes of poor performance. Without a correct diagnosis, it is nearly impossible to cure the problem. "The following are descriptions of three (3) different employees.
Describe the potential causes of poor performance in each case. For each potential cause, identify appropriate solutions to enhance performance."
A. Dion Butler is the assistant greenskeeper at Bahama Country Club. Over the past few months, members have been complaining that racoons are destroying the course and digging holes in the greens. Although Dion has been working evenings and weekends to address the situation, the problem persists. Unfortunately, his boss is interested only in results, and because the racoons are still there, he contends that Dion is not doing his job. He has accused Dion of "slacking off" and threatened his job.
B. Beverly Alfreus works in research and development for a chemical company that makes personal protection equipment (PPE). Her most recent assignment has been the development of a hand sanitizer, but the project is way behind schedule and seems to be going nowhere. CEO Ezra Bodie is very upset and has threatened that if things don't improve, he will suspend bonuses again this year, as he did last year. Beverly feels dejected because without the bonus she won't be able to take her family on vacation post Covid -19 restrictions.
C. Marie Smith is the host of a local television talk show called Morning Bahamas. Although she is a talented performer and comedienne, Marie has an unacceptable record of tardiness. The show's producer Byron McClain, is frustrated because the problem has affected the quality of the show. On several occasions, Marie was unprepared when the show went on the air. McClain has concluded that Marie is not a morning person and has thought about replacing her with a different host.
