Discussion

While Jesus' death on the cross can be seen as a tragedy at the hands of evil people, early Christians understood it as an effective divine event with positive results. To describe these positive results of Jesus' death the writers of the New Testament used metaphors. For instance: the metaphor of a sacrificial death, where Jesus' death was compared to the sacrifice of a lamb in the Jewish temple that was offered in place of the sinner.
