Assignment - Mini Essay ECG

An ECG is a diagnostic tool for identifying cardiac related conditions. In the ECG stress test, the ECG is recorded while the patient is asked to walk on a treadmill and the work level is stepped up by increasing speed and incline to mimic exercise. The images below demonstrate a normal ECG from a healthy patient during a stress test and an ECG from a patient with a suspected coronary artery disease. The ST depression in the patient (ST depression ECG) is used as a diagnostic tool for coronary artery disease.

Question

A. Describe the physiological processes that underlie a normal ECG. Your answer should include an explanation of the movement of ions involved in the generation of the cardiac action potential.

B. Compare these normal physiological processes to those involved with a coronary arteries disease resulting in ST segment depression, as demonstrated by the abnormal ECG.
