Case study

Isabella is a 16-year-old Hispanic female who presented to the prenatal care clinic after discovering she was pregnant.She lives with her parents and two younger brothers, who are loving and supportive but do not yet know about the pregnancy. Isabella also has an older sister with whom she is close; she lives in an apartment nearby. The family is hard-working, with both parents employed full-time to keep up with the bills and mortgage.

Isabella is afraid to tell her family about the pregnancy and does not want to reveal the identity of the baby's father, who is Black. Her parents are conservative and want her and her sister to date strictly within their own culture. She no longer has a relationship with the baby's father.Isabella considered having an abortion but has decided to keep the baby. She is now in her second month of pregnancy and is starting to show. She wears baggy clothes, so no one has noticed yet, although she has told her sister. Isabella attends the public high school and earns good grades. She hopes to go to college but is unsure if she will be able to finish high school now that the baby will be arriving at the end of her junior year.Isabella is worried about financial support once the baby is born. Over the years, her parents have made comments about how much it costs to raise children; now they will have a grandchild to help support. Isabella is currently on her parents' health insurance plan but knows that the baby will have to have separate health insurance that she cannot afford. Isabella also wonders how she will be able to care for the child when she is enrolled in school. Because both Isabella's parents work during the day, they will not be available as caregivers during that time.
