Assignment:

For the post lab assignment, you will write a 2 to 3 page lab discussion and conclusion that demonstrates what you learned in this lab regarding staining and the aseptic technique. In this paper, you will briefly reiterate your aseptic technique procedure (what you did and in your own words) and identify any areas where contamination can occur if the procedure is done incorrectly. Also explain the terms disinfection and sterilization and why these terms are not interchangeable. Next, discuss the results of part two and three of the experiment; include images of your staining results, images of the colony growth and your preliminary identifications based on your colony observations and staining color/morphology and compare your results.

Be sure to describe the morphology and arrangement of the cells in your stained preparations. Also explain the clinical importance of identifying Gram positive vs. Gram negative bacteria and what might happen if your staining procedure was incorrect (such as over decolorizing, leaving stain on too long, etc.) and how that could impact infection treatment of your patient. Also discuss when you might use a preliminary identification in a clinical setting and why this would be beneficial.
