1- Using the Conrad reading and the two narratives about schizophrenia as an example (Trosse & Snyder), describe how the modern "medical model" of mental illness differs from most pre-medical understandings of mental problems.

2- Beginning in the 1950's, the United States experienced a period of sudden and rapid deinstitutionalization as state mental hospitals were shut down. Using the Conrad reading and class lectures, describe some of the primary causes and consequences of deinstitutionalization for Americans living with mental illnesses.

3- The DSM system has helped to organize psychiatry, make diagnoses more reliable, and make treatments more accessible to patients. However, many have criticized the limitations of the DSM system and 2013 DSM-5 is widely considered to be a "failure". Clearly explain at least one significant limitation of the current DSM-5 diagnostic system in psychiatry.
