Course Description - History shapes beliefs, the understanding of events and their causes, and provides the context for future actions. This course will familiarize students with the major events and influences through different historical eras, with particular emphasis on the emergence and development of the Qatari sheikhdom in the era of Ottoman-British rivalry in the Gulf. In addition, it will highlight the formation of Qatar as an independent state in 1971, the formation of the Gulf Cooperation Council, diplomatic relations between the member states, and how they influence the economic development of Qatar. Through the perspective of socio-political history, this course will examine the modernization of Qatar as a richly diverse, multi-cultural society that took place until the era of Emir sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

CSLO 1: Remember Qatar's History across various time periods (modern and contemporary) and understand the most important events, personalities, and features of each era, on the basis various sources, such as websites, academic videos, among others.
CSLO 2: Explain local and regional changes connected with the development of the state and society of Qatar in the modern era by employing case study methodology.
CSLO 3: Recall general knowledge of historical and archaeological sources connected to Qatar's history in a regional and international context employing project-based learning methodology.
