Formal Writing - William Wordsworth and Poetry
You have two options for this paper.
Option 1: Compare any poem we studied in class with Wordsworth's "Preface to Lyrical Ballads".
Option 2: Write a poem of your own, then show how your poem agrees or disagrees with Wordsworth's "Preface to Lyrical Ballads".
Option 3: Select a theme Wordsworth finds worthy of poetry and show how the theme is used by any two poets we've studied in class.
Be sure to include the following information:
• Describe the main points in Wordsworth's poetic theory.
• Determine the relevance of Wordsworth's theory to the poem you've selected or written.
• Support your position using direct references to the poem and ?Preface?.
Your essay must include:
• a description of Wordsworth's theory
• an analysis of the poem(s)
• a clear thesis that states the relationship between the poem(s) and Wordsworth's theory
• at least 3 body paragraphs with?
• topic sentences and transition words/phrases that refer back to the thesis
• MLA format parenthetical citations
• a conclusion that restates the thesis
• an MLA format Works Cited page
Format
Your essay must be no less than 4 pages (if you have written your own poem, you may count it as one of the pages), typed, in Times New Roman font, 12 point, double spaced, with 1? margins at top, bottom and sides. Include your name, class days/time and date of submission on the first page. Paginate in the top right corner in the current MLA specified format. Do not include a title page.
