4. Sigmund Freud coined the term "defense mechanism". Defense mechanisms are emotions that humans wear on their sleeves so to speak in order to cope with the reality they are facing. He believed there purpose was to cope with anxiety and to protect one's ego. He labeled many different emotions as defense mechanisms: denial, displacement, intellectualization, projection, rationalization, reaction formation, regression, repression and sublimation.
