Increases in pro-inflammatory cytokines lead to large alterations of the local environment around the infected mucosa, recruiting inflammatory cells from the blood. PAMPs activate pattern-recognition receptors in epithelial cells, leading to the release of IL-1β and IL-6. Inflammation-anergic resident macrophages sense pro-inflammatory cytokines and release CXCL8 and CCL2.
