Assignment:
Debate Legal Reform
In this option, imagine you and your partners work as part of a special citizen group trying to address a state or national legal issue. Your team's task is to choose an issue and debate several law or legal system reform ideas to address it. Your team will agree on the best policy idea to recommend to lawmakers.
Steps:
Make a list of legal reform issues at the state or national level. Each partner or group member should list at least three examples. Reputable news sources can help you identify issues.
Choose one issue from your combined list to discuss. What are the different ways that government could address the problem? Each partner or group member should list at least two policy ideas. Again, news or issue-based organizations might be a source of ideas for potential solutions.
Analyze policy ideas with the team. List the positives and negatives for at least two policy ideas. What are the good, or positive, aspects of this idea? What are the bad, or negative, aspects? Consider aspects like unintended outcomes, costs, and the level of effort to put it into action. Use a two-column chart for each idea.
Discuss which policy idea is the better solution. Use your charts.
Write a recommendation with your team in two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, describe the legal issue and why there is a need for reform. In the second paragraph, describe your chosen policy idea and why you chose it as the best solution. Make sure your recommendation includes the names of all group members.
