Social Psychology in Your Life: Answering the Who Am 17 Question
In order to study psychological concepts, researchers need ways to measure them. Like many fundamental constructs in psychology, the concept of self is complex and multifaceted, and thus, difficult to measure. Researchers have found that techniques asking people to simply describe themselves in their own words can be especially effective (Kuhn McPartland, 1954; McGuire McGuire, 1982).
Try the "Who am I? technique for measuring self-concepts (Gordon, 1968).
List 15 different answers to the simple question "Who am I?" Answer as if you were giving the answers to yourself-not to somebody else. Write the answers in the order they occur to you. Don't worry about logic or categories.
When you have completed your list, reflect upon your answers.
- Describe the items that relate to role identities (as discussed in your text).
- Describe the items that relate to social identities (as described in your text).
- Do any of the answers conflict with each other? Explain.
