In lecture we learned about miscommunication and dysfunctional patterns of communication.  In discussion this week, you will analyze a miscommunication you have experienced in your personal or professional life.

Address the following:

• Describe the interpersonal gap in the miscommunication example you are writing about.
  • In so doing, explain how the sender/speaker's intentions differed from the listener/receiver's interpretation.
• Assess how this miscommunication could have been prevented or minimized.
  • Evaluate how the speaker could have sent a clearer message and/or used nonverbal behavior to better convey their meaning.
  • Explain how the listener/receiver might have used active listening skills to better understand the speaker's message.
• Do you think the situation you are writing about would have improved if the sender and/or receiver had behaved differently?  Justify your rationale.
