Assignment:
Current Process
The following text describes the current process in more detail.
Before the shopping process begins, a customer can research available products via the Jumbo mobile app. The relevant information is retrieved from the same database that is used during the shopping process, as explained later.
The current system for shopping with a handheld scanner is designed in such a way that customers can pick up the scanning device upon entry and then go on to scan each respective product before placing it in their shopping basket. After their shopping is finished, customers will go to the self- checkout counter to begin the payment process. To begin the process, a QR Code must be scanned. The relevant data is then transferred from the self-scanner to the checkout counter. The customer is then able to complete the payment process at the counter. After payment, two things occur. First, if a bonus card was scanned at checkout, the applicable amount of bonus points is retrieved and sent to the "bonus card" database to update the amount of bonus points a customer has collected.
The customer then receives a receipt, which is an important part of the system, as will be explained. The receipt is especially needed because Jumbo is aiming to limit the potential of theft at the self-checkout counters and has subsequently put a prevention system in place.
This system requires users to scan their receipt, or rather a barcode displayed on their receipt, upon the completed purchase to open the supermarket (exit) gate. Thus, a customer is only able to leave after successful payment, as this is the only possibility to generate the receipt needed to exit.
Furthermore, scanning & payment also produces management reports that are sent to the supermarket administration. After the check-out process is complete, revenue and inventory information are collected. These are then used to update revenue and inventory databases, which, in turn, then provide the relevant daily information needed to create management reports. These reports include the inventory and revenue information of a respective day and are used to analyse a supermarket's performance.
The assignment consists of five questions:
- Describe the current process in a DFD (at least Context Diagram and Level 0DFD)
- Name and describe at least 3 improvements to the current process, using the information in the case description and/or your own imagination. Describe any assumption you make.
- Describe the improved process in a BPMN Diagram. Explain the steps you have taken to develop this diagram, using the information in the answers to questions 1 and 2.
- Develop the Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) that belongs to the improved process, and translate this ERD to (normalized) database tables.
- Which development approach would you choose to implement the improvements? Briefly motivate your answer.
