What an Expanding America Meant
Liberty Enlightening the World (a public display that we know today as the Statue of Liberty) was dedicated in New York Harbor on October 28, 1886. The promise of liberty along with a rapidly expanding economy drew immigrants to the United States, prompted many settlers to uproot themselves and head for the American West in search of a prosperous life, and perpetrated a belief that American ideals should be spread beyond the national borders. This massive inflow of newcomers to the United States helped fuel the nation's extraordinary transformations between 1880 and the eve of World War I from a fledgling new country experimenting with a concept called Democracy to a world power that claimed to be dedicated to spreading democracy and freedom all over the world. Yet, freedom did not always translate into equality.
For this activity, please complete all of the required textbook readings as well as the five readings/learning materials that you self-select on immigrants, African Americans, women, Native Americans, and workers. After you have done so:
Please write five posts, each about 250 words in length, one about each of the materials you chose to review.
Share with the class your thoughts about these materials, and what they tell us about America at the turn between the 19th and 20th centuries. Be sure to focus on the effect on governmental entities, businesses, and domestic institutions.
In doing so, be sure to describe the images or film clips and to provide a good summary of readings so that classmates who did not choose these works gain an understanding of what they are about. Essentially, your task is to "teach" the materials to the others in the class.
After you have posted your thoughts, read everyone's posts and comment on at least three posts from students who chose materials different from yours. In your comments speak to how the materials your classmates analyzed:
Address the growth of the United States from 1880-1915
Redefine America's relationship with the rest of the world.
