A genetic mutation occurs that alters the specificity of the Golgi enzyme that phosphorylates mannose residues in the oligosaccharides of glycoproteins. The effect of the mutation is such that the enzyme now indiscriminately and randomly phosphorylates mannose residues on all glycoproteins passing through the Golgi complex.
