Question: Most of us are interested in the question of, "how is the economy doing?" But to answer this question, we must know how we keep score. This week you'll learn about the gross domestic product (GDP), how it's used to keep score, and some of its challenges.

Upon completing Week 6, you'll be able to:

  • Describe the goals of the macroeconomic economy.
  • Identify the frameworks economists use to analyze the macroeconomy.
  • Identify the policy tools governments can use to manage the macroeconomy.
  • Recognize the patterns of GDP for a high-income economy like the United States in the long run and the short run.
  • Identify the main difficulties that arise in comparing the GDP of different countries.
  • Recognize trends that indicate how the U.S. economy is performing.
