Assignment: Mrs Beryl Brown is a 70 year old woman who has been residing in her own home, a two story terrace house, in Melbourne for almost 50 years. She has lived alone since her husband died two years ago following a cardiac arrest. She has two daughters. One lives in Melbourne with her family of three teenagers and visits her mother twice a week. The other daughter lives interstate.
Recently Mrs Brown she was admitted to hospital by ambulance after being found by her youngest daughter. She had fallen and spent the night lying on the floor near her bed. She was admitted and treated as a public patient. She does not have private health cover.
Mrs Brown fractured her hip. It was determined her fall may have been caused by interactions between some of her medications. After review some medications were removed and some changed and she will now be taking four daily medications instead of the seven she was taking.
After hospital Mrs Brown will spend some time in rehabilitation. Then alternative living arrangements will need to be made as a two story house is not appropriate. Mrs Brown has been fairly independent up until now but acknowledges that it is time to reconsider her living arrangements. She is adamant she will not move into her daughter's house, even though her daughter has asked her to.
The hospital social worker has organised for Mrs Brown's daughter to meet with them and be involved in a discussion about future care.
Mrs Brown is an Australian citizen, has a Medicare card and receives a pension.
