An 18- year-old female mentions to her parents about having stomach pains and frequent bowel movements with blood in the stool and her parents are noticing she is losing weight. They decided to take her to the doctor and was referred to a gerontologist. She mentions she went on a trip 2 weeks ago with some friends on her 18th birthday to Costa Rica and consumed mostly chicken however she did consume a rare, cooked steak.
A blood test was done for any viral infections, stool was collected for culture and a ova & parasite exam. She also underwent a colonoscopy with multiple biopsies. Her blood tests came back with low hemoglobin level is 12 gm/dL. Her colonoscopy examination showed the presence of a parasite.
