Social Justice in Early Childhood Education Assignment - Case Study Report

This assignment is a case study report and involves one day of professional field experience.

The assignment will investigate how an early childhood service promotes the understandings of, and sensitivities to social justice issues related to diversity in early childhood education.

1. You will need to have completed associated readings and tasks from Topic 4 to Topic 8. And then, select one particular area of diversity. Link this to your own lived and/or professional experience. The diversity areas encompass exceptional diversity, socio-economic diversity, religious and spritual diversity, gender and sexual diversity, family diversity and then conduct a case study and write a report.

2. Arrange a full day to attend an early childhood service. This may be the service that you work in. The supervising educator needs to have a leadership role and be an early childhood educator with an early childhood degree qualification. During the professional field experience day, you will be focusing on the area of diversity you have selected for this case study.

3. Discuss this assignment with your supervising educator. The supervising educator will be required to complete the Professional Field Experience Day Form about your professional field experience day.

4. Before beginning any data collection you MUST gain the written consent. Gaining "informed" consent means also providing the participants with "participant information". The copy of the necessary consent form to download is provided in the document Research Ethics Forms. Please read these carefully so that you are aware of what it is that you are required to do to carry out your research ethically.

5. During the Professional Field Experience Day, you are required to conduct one 20-minute interview with either the director or an educator to elicit their understandings of the area of diversity you have selected and the way in which they try to respond to the diversity in the early childhood settings. Also, through informal observation and discussion with other educators, find out how the early childhood service responds to the area of diversity you have selected.

6. Make a list of resources and materials that might be encouraging for teaching and learning around your topic. For example, if your topic is exceptional diversity, you might note resources and materials that represent children with exceptionality.

7. Also collect various documents (e.g. service's inclusion policy, curriculum, and practice) to write your report. Especially, if they have written policies available (e.g. anti-discrimination, anti-racist and anti-sexiest policies), ask if you can have a copy.

8. Complete your one-day professional field experience. Make sure that you complete the Professional Field Experience Day Form and ask the supervising educator to sign it confirming your attendance. Your completed Ethics Form and the Professional Experience Day Forms should be submitted separately. It means that you are requested to submit the documents as a separate pdf ?le. PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE THEM AS AN APPENDIX.

9. Based on what you learnt on your Professional Field Experience Day, prepare a case study report. Consider any modifications and changes you might suggest for the service's practice, curriculum, resources, and materials and/or environments as a whole in supporting the area of diversity you have selected. In this analysis, consider inclusive curricula and ways of inclusive practice.

This assessment task is made up of five parts and additional guides are offered in each part below:

Part A: Introduction to the report (200 words)

The following questions should be addressed in your introduction:

What the area of diversity you are going to examine?

Why have you selected this particular area of diversity? Discuss this in relation to your own lived and/or professional experience.

Why do you believe this area of diversity is an important topic in early childhood education?

How will you argue in this report? Provide a brief outline of your report using the headings below.

Part B: Policies and Current debates (500 words)

Address current policies and debates, and practices in the area of the diversity you have selected and how policies, at the international, national, and local level, support the needs of children, especially in relation to the area of the diversity you have selected. The policies are expected to reference correctly.

Part C: Professional Field Experience Day (500 words)

Describe the early childhood service you visited and its local community.

Provide the interviewee's information (e.g. teaching experience and education).

Identify how diversity is generally evident in the service's philosophy statement and policy. The service's philosophy statement and policy are expected to be referenced.

Part D: Findings (800 words)

Present selected parts of the information you have collected at the service. Summarise the responses given by the interviewee, informal observations and discussion with other educators during the visit.

The following questions could guide you in writing your analysis (NOT TO BE USED AS HEADINGS):

What do you observe as the early childhood service's responsibility in terms of varying the learning environment for diverse groups of children?

At the early childhood service you have visited, what theories do underpin the development and implementation of the early childhood curricula to support the needs of children from diverse backgrounds?

What kind of resources, materials, and strategies do the service provider to respond to the needs of children and their families and to engage respectful interactions for children in relation to the area of diversity you have selected?

What beliefs, values, knowledge, and attitudes towards diversity and inclusiveness do the early childhood service hold especially the area of the diversity you have selected and how these influence their implementation of practice?

What are the major barriers and challenges for the early childhood service to promote diversity with regard to the area of the diversity you have selected?

Part E: Conclusion: Implications to promote the diversity (400 words)

Suggest how the area of diversity you have selected could be further promoted at the early childhood service you visited. Remember to consider your role in supporting children's and families' diversity as well as a range of effective and authentic strategies, resources and materials. In conclusion, provide a brief personal reflection on your knowledge, assumptions, bias, and beliefs in becoming a socially just teacher. The reflection should include connections to your readings provide in the topic notes.

1. Analyse a range of attitudes and beliefs about current Australian social policies and social systems;

2. Recognise and effectively communicate their own educational philosophical base within a wider cultural framework;

3. Evaluate various ways of establishing inclusive practice for culturally and linguistically diverse children and families;

5. Use independent judgment to create inclusive early childhood curricula reflecting and accommodating children from diverse backgrounds including those from non-English speaking backgrounds; and

6. Demonstrate a proficient standard of communication and professional responsibility.

Note - Send the research and choose the gender and sexual diversity complete PART C and PART D. The part c and Part D it professional experience field day, need to attend a child centre to collect information.
