Question: One of the big interpretive questions regarding the post-Napoleonic political settlement in Europe is whether it is better described as a "pragmatic" or realistic approach to the social and political situation at the time, or as a more ideologically driven commitment to monarchical conservatism. (Broers and Neuberger for secondary material; Metternich's Europe and the French Restoration), there is evidence for both interpretations. But what I'd like to know here is, where would a politician today stand based on how you read the evidence?

Review the evidence for both positions but come down down on one side or the other: if you had to use a single term to describe the dominant trends of "Metternichian" politics, would you say that it was primarily "pragmatic" or primarily "reactionary"? Where would a "normal" politician stand today?
