Microbe PosterDirections

Why We Are Doing This:

Goals:
1. You probably took this course to learn about diseases. This is your chance to research one pathogen or friendly microbe and to learn the ‘important stuff' about several other microbes.
2. For the microbe you pick to research in depth, I want you to learn:
a. Its structure
b. How that structure helps it survive in the environment
c. How it is spread between humans and/or how it is spread between humans and the environment.
d. How it causes disease or, in the case of friendly microbes, how it benefits humans.
e. How we can prevent the disease or get more contact with friendly microbes.
f. How we can treat the disease or how disease treatments can hurt friendly microbes.
3. Have fun with this project!
a. Learning and research is more effective if you are interested in the topic.
b. Being creative in presenting your research is connected to critical thinking and long term memory. In other words, you'll remember what you researched.

Directions:
1. Choose any microbes that affects human health (pathogen or beneficial)
2. Make a poster about your microbe.
a. For the poster, you must use scientific language and reference your sources.
a. You should not have any quotes. Use proper citations!
b. You must have all sections in part 3 to gain full credit
3. Your poster must have the following sections:

1. Picture
a. Pathogen and Beneficial microbe: Give us an idea of what your microbe looks like.
• Depending on what kind of microbe it is, this will probably be an electron microscope photo.
b. Pathogen: Give us an idea of what the disease looks like on the host (if feasible).
• For example, for Herpes Simplex Virus, I'd show a herpetic lesion.
• For example, for Bacillus subtilis, it is really hard to show intestinal distress or lack of soil carbon cycling, so no picture for that.

2. Identification
a. Pathogen and Beneficial microbe: Tell us about what kind of cell/virus/multicellular organism your microbe is.
• Include structures used in classification of your microbe.
• For example, for Herpes Simplex Virus, I'd write that it is an enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus.
• For example, for Bacillus subtilis, I'd write that it is a bacterium that is spore-forming and a Gram positive rod (bacillus).

3. Host Effects
a. Pathogen: Describe the disease your pathogen causes
b. Beneficial microbe: Describe the consequence of your microbe not being present

4. Tropism
a. Pathogen: Describe where the pathogen manifests in or on the body when causing disease
b. Beneficial microbe: Describe where the microbe manifests in or on the body when benefiting the host

5. Treatment
a. Pathogens:
• Tell us how to control the pathogen outside the human body: hand washing, disinfectants, sterilization procedures, etc.
• Tell us how to control the pathogen within the human body. For example, you could talk about antimicrobials, vaccinations, and the immune response.
b. Beneficial microbe:
• Tell us how to be exposed, appropriately, to the microbe.
• Tell us what behavior can cause us to lose the microbe. For example, improper antibiotic use, and so on.

6. Works Cited or References
a. This information can go on a second slide.
b. All citations must be from scientific sources and provide accurate information
c. Information and photos in the poster should have in-text citations that refer to the full references at the end of the poster.
d. Below is some more detailed information on the reference requirements:
• In-text citation examples (both examples are appropriate):
i. HIV infects the host's T-cells, macrophages and dendritic cells (Calpham and McKnight, 2001)
ii. HIV infects the host's T-cells, macrophages and dendritic cells1
• Do not use " ", you can not copy and paste direct quotes from your sources. All information must be paraphrased
• Reference page example:
i. Clapham, CR and McKnight A (2001). HIV-1 receptors and cell tropism. British Medical Bulletin; 58: 43-59
• Approved sources
i. Journal articles (peer-reviewed or Open access)
ii. Books
iii. Thesis

7. Make sure the poster is well written and visually appealing
a. Well written: use grammar and punctuation that the reader can easily understand what you mean.
b. Visually appealing: format your poster so the text flows well and use color and pictures to communicate.
8. Lastly, make sure I can open and download your poster and reference.
