Assignment:

Watch the videos "Physical Development in Adolescence", "Brain Changes in Adolescence," and "Piagets Formal Operations (start minute 4:50 to end 5:54."

Answer the following questions:

1. Describe the differences between puberty and adolescence. What are some of the milestones that occur that are directly related to puberty?

2. The brain is not fully developed until your mid-twenties. Based on the brain development, a new sub-stage of development has been added to the stages of development, called emerging adulthood from 18-25. When we look at the teen brain, we understand that brain development is still occurring and connections are being made that are setting up the foundation of the adult brain through the process of brain development and then later pruning of inefficient or unused connections which happens around age 17-18 years (ex. you played an instrument in middle school, but stopped in high school - your brain will prune those unused connections and you will lose your skill level).

When we understand the milestones of brain development that are occurring in the teen brain, we then understand why teens may exhibit certain behaviors. Describe an experience (your own or from a teen you know - no names and no deep dark secrets) from the teen years (ages 12-18) that you can now understand a bit better based on your new knowledge of brain development during this stage of development. Explain what part of brain development impacted this experience.
