Question:

Describe the current industrial relations issues impacting CoffeeVille

CoffeeVille Scenario

Coffeeville is a Melbourne based café that was established in 2009 and quickly developed a reputation for providing high quality 'gourmet' food and beverages. The company was founded by financial management specialist Rufus Belcastran and his sister Emma Belcastran, a sales and marketing specialist. The café has experienced a great deal of success due to the growing demand for their gourmet product and high-quality service combination. The owner-operators pride themselves on delivering a superior food and customer service combination.

Their values include supporting the local community, delivering quality customer service, offering healthy options, treating their staff respectfully and selling high-quality food and beverages. A key issue for the Belcastrans is that CoffeeVille values "Diversity".  They believe that:

  • their workforce should be representative of the community in which it is located
  • CoffeeVille should actively work towards removing barriers which limit their current and future staff from actively participating in all aspects of working at CoffeeVille

After developing a successful single-site business in Melbourne, the Belcastrans have decided to expand their business nationally. The short-term plan is to open a new site in each Australian capital city within the next 12 months. It is a huge challenge for the Belcastrans who will need to take on corporate leadership roles and manage the chain of cafés.

One of their first steps was to hire a Human Resources Consultant, which is a strategic role that will develop the Human Resources function. You were successful in gaining the position due to your wide-ranging experience in HR and your ability to think strategically.

Your role will be to:

  • Analyse the organisation's business environment and current strategy to determine the HR requirements of the business;
  • Identify the human resource needs of the organisation;
  • Develop and execute legally compliant strategies that reflect 'best practice' approaches and current trends in human resources;
