Community-based support group observation and reaction paper. This paper is due in week #3 should not exceed 3 pages. Attend any community-based group of your choice. You must identify yourself as a social work student.

Not doing so violates the NASW Code of Ethics as you may be seen to be representing yourself as a consumer and not a student. You must document that you have done so in your paper. You may locate groups on-line and in the newspaper.

Please be sure not to attempt to attempt a closed group, as you will be asked to leave. Examples of community support groups include, but are not limited to:

1. AA, NA, CA, Al-Anon
2. Parents Without Partners
3. Bereavement Support groups at funeral homes.
4. Support groups for family and friends with cancer or other chronic or life threatening diseases.
5. Autism Support Group It is important that you attend a group to which you might refer a client.

You are being asked to move out of your comfort zone for this assignment.

Please do not attend a group of which you may already be a member or participant. Please address consider the following in your written discussion:

• What did you observe about this group?

• Describe the culture of the group? Did you note any rituals or traditions?

• What was it like to locate and attend this group? What kinds of thoughts, feelings, and associations did you have when walking into the room and throughout the meeting?

• What did you notice about the group members with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, gender, sexual orientation, and ability?

• According to the literature, what type of group did you attend? Please cite the specific data source to support your ideas.
