Objective

This assignment provides an opportunity to practice developing a strategic approach for composing and sending an informative business message in a workplace context. The message being sent, may be from the perspective of someone that holds a position of formal authority such as a manager, director or Chief Executive Officer or an employee that does not hold a position of formal authority.

Strategic Approach

The strategic approach is one that combines the written message with at least one other channel for communication, such as face-to-face conversation. The final product will be in the form of an e-mail, memo or letter depending on the most appropriate method for the situation. The focus for learning is on both the strategic process of analyzing, drafting and writing and the final written product.

There is a choice of topics. The message may: (a) address a current situation in your workplace (b) address a situation from a previous workplace that you would have liked to address but did not have opportunity, courage or skills to do so or (c) address a hypothetical situation where you are attempting to inform your employee or employer of an issue that is of personal and or professional importance.

Part 1- Written Expectations for Process (1-2 pages)

Describe the context and purpose of the message.
Identify the channel for the message (e-mail, memo or letter).
Explain the strategic approach that you are using to combine a written message with a face- to- face conversation or any other communication channels.
Identify the direct or indirect strategy that you will develop and why.
Respond to relevant questions and address the steps in the 3X3 writing process.
Refer to relevant and applicable principles and techniques for developing an effective message as discussed in Chapter 5 with particular attention to the Checklist on pg.
