For this assignment, you will write a very brief formal/functional analysis on one work of art.
Step 1: Read the three PDFs Formal Analysis Terms, Part 1,Preview the document Formal Analysis Terms, Part 2Preview the document and Formal Analysis Terms, part 3 Preview the document
Step 2: Look at the Image 1 and Image 2. I have specifically left off the titles of the works but these were part of a sixteenth-century manuscript commissioned by the Spanish and illustrated by indigenous artists.
Step 3: Answer the following questions. The formal analysis pertains to Image #1 only while the function analysis is for Image 2.
1. Formal Analysis: Describe the composition of the image Write one sentence each describing
A. the proportion of the figures - how do they relate to each other and also the other objects in the image
B. use of color - where are the bright colors, muted colors, etc. in the scene.
C. relationship of what is in foreground vs. background,
D. texture - even though the entire object is painted, where in the work does the scenery appear to have different textures and what are they?
E. shape - describe two geometric shapes present in the work. Where are they located?
F. line - are there repeating diagonal, vertical, horizontal lines anywhere in the work? Where are the thicker lines versus thinner lines?
2. Functional Analysis: Think about the object as a whole and make a guess. What was it used for? Who owned it? Why would someone want this type of image?
