Social workers and case managers are often in the role of managing clients' feelings. At times, clients may present as angry, hostile or even violent. Not every single client you have is difficult to work with, which leads us to ask - what makes some clients so challenging to work with? Many of the challenging clients you may be dealing with are struggling in ways that they cannot properly articulate or describe. They may not even be able to understand why they are behaving as they are.

Case management is about optimizing - helping clients become effective and functioning by removing barriers and enhancing strengths. A challenging client is challenging because he or she is throwing more barriers in their way, by the manner in which they are behaving. Considering a client that you have been working with, please answer these questions:

1. Describe the client, including age, gender identity, and current circumstances.

2. To what extent has this client been able to make choices about how they choose to participate in the services?

3. Based on your knowledge of this individual, how much potential do you think this person has to effect positive change in his/her life?

4. To what degree have you assumed control of what the client needs to do? To what degree have you negotiated and collaborated with this client? Have you discussed with the client that right to participate or not participate in the services? Describe your observations. What types of feelings do you experience when working with this client?
