This fifty minute film examines the social construction of several African American stereotypes.
1) Describe the characteristics of "the Sambo?" What were the social relations (what was happening in that society) that gave rise to such a stereotype? In other words, what was the stereotype meant to justify.
2) Describe the characteristics of "the Auntie?" What were the social relations (what was happening in that society) that gave rise to such a stereotype? In other words, what was the stereotype meant to justify.
3) Describe the characteristics of "the savage/brute?" What were the social relations (what was happening in that society) that gave rise to such a stereotype? In other words, what was the stereotype meant to justify. In addition explain, why such a stereotype would have been unimaginable prior to the Civil War.
4) Describe the characteristics of "pickaninny?" What were the social relations (what was happening in that society) that gave rise to such a stereotype? In other words, what was the stereotype meant to justify.
5) Big think question: One of the scholars in this film argues that these stereotypes were just as dangerous and damaging as actual laws than enforced segregation and inequality. What in this movie supports that claim? (How did such attitudes effect the self esteem of African Americans?) "A" answers will demonstrate that they watched the entire film, illustrating their point with examples.
