Observation 2: Play and Playfulness Typical Play Development

Play is the occupation of childhood. Through play experiences, children are able to learn and develop client factors and performance skills.

Use the following like and select the first video from the list.

Video - Typical 2 year old play development

Observe the two children playing in the video. The older child, Kaylee, is approximately 2 years old and the younger, Colin, is approximately 8 months old.

For each child:
• Identify the stage of play observed using Piaget's Stages of Play
• Describe the characteristics of play observed. Include things like the type of play, level of engagement, evidence of enjoyment in activity, client factors involved, etc.
• Describe what each child is doing including the toys that they are playing with
• Are the play behaviors and toys used by each child age-appropriate? Provide examples to support your conclusion.

Remember your note must be in 12 point Times New Roman or Cambria font, single or double-spaced, and not exceed one page.

Resource #2:
The ability to recommend appropriate toys and play activities is an important part of pediatric occupational therapy practice. Search for and print out one resource that could be used for parent and/or caregiver education related to play for preschool aged children.

Observation #3: Handwriting

Prewriting and Handwriting Skills Development

Handwriting is an important functional task required of children in the occupation of education. Prewriting skills are developed early. They are the foundation for more mature writing of shapes, letters and numbers. Motor, cognitive, and sensory systems work together in prewriting.

Nile is a 3-year-old typically developing child. She is seated at an easel and is engaged in a drawing activity in her classroom.

PART ONE: Informal Observation
Using your blue examination booklet, take some rough notes while watching the video for the first time. What major things do you observe? Is Nile enjoying the activity? How does she utilize the materials? What types of strokes is she using? How is she holding the markers?

PART TWO: Formal Observation Note
Respond to the following prompts to write your observations of Nile:

• Describe the characteristics of prewriting observed. Include:
o The type of prewriting strokes and behaviors utilized
o Upper extremity function and positioning
o Grasp pattern(s) and manipulation skills
o Posture including dynamic and static balance, points of stability and mobility
• How does the environment support Nile's engagement in the activity?
• Are Nile's prewriting skills age-appropriate? How do your observations support your conclusion?

Resource #3:
Search for and print out one resource that could be used for parent and/or caregiver education related to prewriting skills for preschool aged children. You resource can address typical development of handwriting skills, adaptations for preschool children to promote functional grasp, grasp pattern development for handwriting, etc. Make sure that you select a resource that a parent or caregiver can understand.
