Describe the basic issues involved in trying to decide whether one type of moral perspective is better than another.

Obvious examples from the present day include bans on stem cell research and legal definitions of 'marriage' as a heterosexual relationship. The topic becomes more interesting, in the eyes of many, when one considers the role of religion in the 19th century abolitionist movement and the 20th century civil rights movement. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech-an excerpt from which is an epigraph to Chapter 8-makes very explicit reference to God, even quoting from the Hebrew scriptures. Whether this is objectionable in a secular context is a worthwhile question, especially given that some have also cited passages in the Bible which seem to support slavery and separation of the races.
