1. conformism - tremendous cultural stress on appearing and acting like others. Individualism was questioned as subversive and potentially dangerous.
2. consumerism - increased buying of manufactured goods seen as beneficial to the economy which proved the superiority of American capitalism to Soviet communism
3. containment - a foreign policy plan in America post-WWII that involved the US vowing to prevent the spread of communism
4. civil rights - Democrats' continued backing of Southern segregation; beginning of Northerners' demand Constitutional rights for Southern African-Americans
