Part 1: Principles of Art and Design.
1: What is the definition of the "Principles of Art", according to your textbook?
List and formally define the 8 "Principles of Art" Unity, Variety, Balance, Scale, Proportion, Focal Point, Pattern & Rhythm.
Part 2: Image Selection.
You will be selecting a total of two different images from your textbook and 2 different "Principles of Art", (one sculpture and one painting).
1: Selecting one "Principle of Art" from your list above.
Then select an image of a sculpture from the textbook that you feel best represents/emphasizes that particular principle of Art.
Include artist name, title of work, year created and material.
2: Selecting another "Principle of Art" from your list above
Then select an image of a painting from the textbook that you feel best represents/emphasizes that particular principle.
Part 3: Analysis.
Now, you will take each of your selected sculpture and painting images and add your analysis.
First Image sculpture
Come up with three descriptive words that describe that specific Principle found in the art work.
Compose a formal sentence, using the three descriptive words, about the sculpture.
Refer to 'Looking at Art: Elements of Art and Design" for list of sample words.
Avoid superficial words "pretty", "ugly" "important" etc
Example #1 - Sculpture
Name: "Stele of Hammurabi", c. 1792-1750 BCE. Diorite, 88? × 25?".
Element: Pattern
Descriptive Words: Man-made, irregular, repeating
Example Sentence: The Stele of Hammurabi is a man-made sculpture that irregularly repeats shapes and lines to document a historic event.
