Phototransduction in rod cells can be extremely sensitive to light. Dark-adapted rod photoreceptor cells can respond to single photons, that is a single activated molecule of the GPCR, rhodopsin, can cause an electrical response sufficient to convey light absorption to downstream retinal neurons.
