Phototransduction in rod cells can be extremely sensitive to light. Dark-adapted rod photoreceptor cells can respond to single photons, that is a single activated molecule of the GPCR, rhodopsin, can cause an electrical response sufficient to convey light absorption to downstream retinal neurons. Describe the specific mechanisms of the phototransduction pathway in rod cells which contribute to this sensitivity.
