Assignment: Mindfulness approaches to psychotherapy have been around a long time. However, only recently has it become an ubiquitous therapy for addressing a myriad of psychological difficulties. This approach to therapy has been dubbed as the "third wave" in the field of clinical psychology. A mindfulness approach utilizes Zen Buddhism and other ancient ways of understanding the human experience. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) are two such mindfulness approaches.

Describe some of the techniques associated with acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

Mental illness is the outcome of a complex web of factors involving biological predisposition and life experience. In order to understand psychopathology, we must fully understand both of these aspects of mental illness. In previous units, we have seen some examples of what can happen when malfunctioning of the brain results in learning disorders, communication disorders, or sleep disorders. In this unit, we will look at other problems that can arise from brain dysfunction, with particular attention to affective disorders and schizophrenia. These classes of mental illness will be examined with respect to possible causation, including the associated structural, physiological, and biochemical abnormalities. Possible corrective or ameliorative medications and therapies will also be considered.
