Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Understand why children and young people may need to be looked after
2 Understand how care is provided for children and young people
3 Understand the risks to children and young people of abusive and exploitative behaviour
4 Know strategies to minimise the risk to children and young people of abusive and exploitative behaviour.
P1 describe the main reasons why children and young people may need to be looked after away from their families
P2 identify the current relevant legislation affecting the care of children and young people
P3 describe health and social care service provision for looked-after children and young people
P4 describe signs and symptoms of child abuse
P5 describe appropriate responses where child abuse is suspected or confirmed, making reference to current legislation and policies
P6 identify the strategies and methods of supporting children, young people and their families where abuse is suspected or confirmed.
M1 analyse how policies and procedures help children/young people and their families whilst the child is being looked after
M2 compare the care provided by at least two different organisations offering care to children and young people
M3 explain strategies and methods to minimise the risk to children and young people where abuse is suspected or confirmed.
D1 evaluate the legislative rights of the child/young person and the rights oftheir families, bearing in mind that the needs of the child/young person are paramount
D2 evaluate a range of strategies and methods to support children/young people and their families where abuse is suspected or confirmed.
